2005 Domaine Vincent Girardin Corton Charlemagne Quintessence
Full, bright yellow. Exotic, superripe aromas of apricot and hazelnut.
Creamy-sweet, remarkably deep and harmonious; offers a chewy suggestion
of extract without coming across as phenolic. Wonderfully rich, ripe and
layered for a wine with 13.3% alcohol. Prior to this vintage, Girardin's
Quintessence bottling came from vines in Aloxe-Corton. But now it's from
this parcel of vines in Pernand, which he purchased in 2005. The vines
are up to 70 years old, and in 2005 were harvested until September 30.

2004 Domaine Vincent Girardin Corton Charlemagne
Quintessence
(from old vines on the Aloxe-Corton side of this
grand cru) Musky, leesy, ineffable aromas of pineapple, apple, flowers,
minerals, nut oil and charred oak. Almost painfully intense and bright but
wonderfully ripe and not hard. Like the Chevalier, this is a bracing mouthful of
crushed stone. A wine with this kind of ripe fruity acidity could never become
tiring to drink. Extremely long on the aftertaste. 92-95 points

($197; made entirely from vines in Aloxe-Corton) Pale
yellow. High-pitched aromas of lemon peel and minerals, with a suggestion of
exotic fruits. Then powerful and chewy, with superb verve and length. The
powerful spine of acidity is enrobed by the wine's flesh but gives the wine
terrific power and structure. Stony finish offers outstanding length and cut.

2004 Domaine Vincent Girardin Corton Charlemagne
Cool, musky aromas of underripe pineapple, clove,
menthol and oak char. Fat, creamy and rich, with intense apple and spice
flavors. A very pliant style of Corton-Charlemagne, not at all hard. This is a
blend of three parcels, with a piece in Pernand-Vergelesses accounting for 50%
of the wine. 91-94 points

($101; according to Girardin, all these '04s were
racked without air at the end of August, 2005, then returned to used barrels
with their lees until they were assembled in tank for three weeks prior to being
bottled in March of 2006, fined but not filtered) Pale yellow. Aromas of
mirabelle, nutmeg, candied ginger, and spicy, vanillin oak. Tight, taut and
penetrating, with a powerful structure and very firm acidity suggesting that
this grand cru will need at least five to seven years of aging. The '05 version
is much easier and sweeter in comparison, but this is chewy, powerful and
gripping, not to mention elegant. Finishes very long, with notes of mint and wet
stone. 93(+?) points

Subtly complex aromas of nut oil, nutmeg, menthol and
charred oak. A huge, fat, sweet wine with outstanding palate-staining
concentration. Expressive, soil-inflected, highly nuanced flavors of minerals,
nut oils, spring flowers and spices. As chewy and thick as this is, it's also
wonderfully light on its feet, with uncommon class for Batard. This is from
Girardin's oldest vines, harvested on October 3. 93-96 points

$220) Sweet, sappy aromas of peach and nuts. At once sweet and gripping, with
superb sugar/acid balance. Less minerally and less refined than the Chevalier
but offers more obvious volume today without any loss of verve. Peachy and long
on the back. Girardin's best '04s show outstanding richness and opulence for the
vintage, and a bit more verve than the fatter '05s. (Vineyard Brands,

($73) Pungent, perfumed aromas of lime, apple, iodine and dusty stone.
Rich, dense and lively, with vibrant, very pure flavors of lime, spice
and dusty stone. At once chewy and light on its feet thanks to brisk acidity.
Finishes clean and long. The most intensely flavored of the Girardin 2001s
I've tasted to date. This grand cru vineyard appears to have done particularly
well in vintage 2001. 93 points
