2000 Domaine Robert Jayer Gilles Echezeaux
($155) Good ruby-red. Blackcurrant, dark
chocolate, minerals, licorice and roasted
oak on the nose. Densely packed, concentrated
and pure, with a suave texture and the firming
influence of minerality. This has superb
balance and vinosity for the year. Finishes
extremely long and ripe, with the finest
tannins of this set of 2000s. I recall that
this cuvee was also a standout in 1992. 92 points

1999 Domaine Robert Jayer Gilles Echezeaux
($155) Red-ruby. Complex, vibrant nose combines
blackcurrant, blackberry, violet, minerals
and woodsmoke, along with a menthol austerity.
Big, broad and deep; round and suave. A very
elegant, subtle wine whose firm tannins are
perfectly supported by lovely finishing fruit.

Echezeaux, Flagey Echezeaux, Cote de Nuits,
Burgundy, France
Pinot Noir (a dry red table wine)
The 1999 Echezeaux, harvested at 40 hectoliters
per hectare, displays dark fruit, Asian spice,
and sweet oak aromas. It has outstanding
depth of red and black fruits (mostly cherries
and blackberries) as well as Asian spices
in its pure, dense personality. This medium
to full-bodied wine is fresh, harmonious,
and boisterous. It reveals loads of ripe
tannin and sweet oak in its long finish.
Drink it between 2004 and 2012.
