2000 Domaine Claude Dugat Chapelle Chambertin
Bright ruby-red. Lively aromas of maraschino cherry
and licorice, but less thoroughly ripe than the grand crus from Dugat's own
holdings. Juicy and powerful in the mouth, but without the pliancy and sweetness
of Dugat's own bottlings. The oak here is less well integrated, and the very
long finish shows a bit of tannic dryness. 90 points

2001 Domaine Claude Dugat Chapelle Chambertin
Domaine Claude Dugat Chapelle
Chambertin, Gevrey Chambertin, Cote de Nuits, Burgundy, France Pinot Noir (a
dry red table wine)
The medium to dark ruby-colored 2001 Chapelle-Chambertin, a wine unavailable in
the United States through this estate’s American importer, is produced from a
parcel Claude Dugat works en metayage (a rent is paid to the proprietor in wine,
generally one-third to half of the production) for its owner. Its gorgeous
aromatics reveal spiced black cherries, cassis, and candied blackberries.
Medium-bodied, lush, and plump, it coats the palate with loads of earthy red
cherries. This softly-textured, succulent wine should be consumed over the next
10 years. When asked if he had a preference between the 2000s and
2001s, the self-effacing Claude Dugat responded that “I like them about the
same, even though the 2000s have a roundness that particularly appeals to me.”
Later in the conversation, when I commented on the firm nature of his 2001s, he
said “reaching full (grape) maturity was a real problem in 2001, but these wines
will soften considerably at bottling when the CO2 is removed.”

2001 Domaine Claude Dugat Chapelle Chambertin
(Dugat has a metayage arrangement on these vines,
owned by Philippe Livera, and he keeps half of the production) Bright medium
ruby. Aromas of minerals, licorice and earth. Sweet and supple in the mouth;
more gentle and open than the Griottes. Fruit-driven maraschino cherry flavor,
with relatively little torrefaction. The tannins reach the teeth, but come
across as less sweet than those of the Charmes and Griottes. Still, this
promises to be the best vintage yet for this cuvee 90-93 points
